Historic model used in Amsterdam

Jan van der Heyden was the inventor of the street lights that are being renewed. Many of these were installed in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. This model was used as street lighting, particularly in Amsterdam. The special thing about this light was that its fitting emitted light from a flame of a wick in what is called a 'snotneus' (oil lamp), filled with rapeseed oil.

The 'Jan van der Heijden' model was able to be reconstructed using a historic book of models that had been preserved, plus an original model. This old model can also be found on the Skinny Bridge in Amsterdam.
